DIRECT AND INDIRECT OBJECT:

Read the sentences carefully.

Umer gave Ali a book.
Umer gave a book to Ali.

The Verb "Give" has two Objects
Book and Ali.

Ali is an Indirect Object.
Book is a Direct Object.

A Direct Object is followed by a PREPOSITION.

See some more examples of the two structures:

Amir gave Farhan a CD.
Amir gave a CD to Farhan.

I will send him a postcard.
I will send a postcard to him.

She bought her an ice-cream.
She bought an ice-cream for her.

Prepositions (To and For)

We can use TO with these Verbs:

--> Feed, Give, Hand, Lend, Offer, Pass, Pay, Post, Promise, Read, Sell, Send, Show, Take, Teach, Tell, Throw and Write.

EXAMPLE:
Farhad paid some money to the cashier.
Farhad paid the cashier some money.

We showed the photos to her.
We showed her the photos.

We can use FOR with these verbs:

--> Book, Bring, Build, Buy, Choose, Cook, Fetch, Find, Get, Leave, Make, Order, Pick, Reserve, Save.

EXAMPLE:
They found a spare ticket for me.
They found me a spare ticket.

I have saved a seat for you.
I have saved you a seat.

She is making a cake for her.
She is making her a cake.

GIVE + PRONOUN

Sometimes there is a PRONOUN and a NOUN after a VERB such as GIVE.

The PRONOUN usually COMES BEFORE the NOUN.

EXAMPLE:
Arsalan is very fond of Asma. He gave her some flowers.

We use "HER" because "Asma" is mentioned earlier. Her
comes before some flowers.

Arsalan bought some flowers. He gave them to Asma.

We use "THEM" because the "FLOWERS" are mentioned
earlier. Them comes before ASMA.
