In a significant step towards sustainability, Saudi Arabia has launched the Sustainable Ihram Initiative, an eco-conscious program designed to recycle used ihrams. This pioneering initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Culture’s Fashion Commission, aims to minimize textile waste while maintaining the sacred traditions of Islam.

Revolutionizing Ihram Recycling

Through a strategic collaboration with Saudi Investment Recycling Co. and Tadweem, the initiative involves collecting, cleaning, and transforming used ihrams into new garments via an advanced textile recycling process. Pilgrims who participate in this program contribute to a circular economy that benefits both the environment and society.

Mass Collection for a Greener Future

To facilitate large-scale recycling, 336 collection bins were strategically placed in Mina, allowing pilgrims to dispose of their used ihrams responsibly. These efforts have resulted in the collection of tonnes of fabric, significantly reducing textile waste while ensuring the sustainability of religious practices.
