China to Host Historic Marathon Featuring Human and Humanoid Robot Runners

China is set to make history on April 13 by hosting the world’s first marathon featuring both human and humanoid robot runners. This groundbreaking event will put cutting-edge robotics to the test alongside human endurance, creating an unprecedented race format.

A Race Like No Other

The marathon will feature 12,000 human runners alongside humanoid robots from leading tech companies. While both will follow the same route, robots will race in a separate lane for safety. The competition is open to both remote-controlled and fully autonomous robots, but all must have a humanoid appearance with bipedal walking or running capabilities—meaning wheeled robots are not allowed.

Race Rules & Unique Challenges

To stay competitive with human runners, robots are allowed to swap batteries during the race. Additionally, teams may switch robots in a relay format, but each change comes with a 10-minute penalty. The cutoff time for robots to complete the race is 3 hours and 30 minutes.

The top three finishers—whether human or robot—will be awarded. Additionally, robots will compete for special prizes, including:
