Punjab Expands Free Public Wi-Fi: Faster Speeds & More Hotspots for Citizens
In a significant step toward digital inclusivity, the Punjab government has expanded its free public Wi-Fi service, bringing faster internet access to more residents. The initiative has increased the number of Wi-Fi hotspots in Lahore from 200 to 230 while introducing Wi-Fi 6 technology, ensuring better connectivity and improved speeds.
The expansion now covers 300 locations across 11 districts, offering a vital digital lifeline to residents in major cities. The public Wi-Fi service has already witnessed impressive engagement, with over 17.7 million users benefitting and a staggering 438 terabytes of data consumed.
Authorities have emphasized that this free Wi-Fi service is intended for essential use, such as accessing educational resources, communication, and government services. To ensure fair usage and prevent congestion, video streaming will not be supported.
Looking ahead, the Punjab government has ambitious plans to extend connectivity even further, making high-speed internet accessible to more communities across the province. This expansion reflects the government's commitment to bridging the digital divide and fostering a more connected and informed society.
